Like all other technical installations, nuclear facilities are being decommissioned at the end of their operating life. Radioactive contamination and activation make the decommissioning work and the subsequent dismantling quite elaborate.

Long-time experience in the handling of radioactive material is put to use by GNS today in its decommissioning projects.

For packaging of radioactive waste from dismantling, GNS has designed and constructed a number of special transport and storage casks. These casks with adapted shielding have been designed to embed activated core components and are licensed for transportation and storage. For the packaged waste, GNS offers qualified documentation for interim storage and subsequent final disposal.
