The GNS group of companies is specialized in management of spent fuel elements from nuclear power plants as well as in safe conditioning and storage of low and medium level waste from plant operation.
For transport and interim storage of spent fuel, GNS developed a new cask type, the CASTOR® more than 30 years ago. Today the various types of CASTOR®s are internationally recognized trademarks for nuclear safety and innovation. All types of operating waste from nuclear power plants and other nuclear facilities can be treated with GNS conditioning facilities, such as the supercompactor FAKIR or the drying facility FAVORIT, to reduce volumes. This saves costs for transport and storage.
As an ideal safety cask for packaging of radioactive waste, GNS engineers have developed the MOSAIK® shielding cask.
GNS operates sites for interim storage of spent fuel and radioactive waste from German nuclear power plants as well as of wastes from the reprocessing of German fuel coming back from England and France. For one German state, GNS operates a storage facility for medicine and research waste.
For decommissioning projects GNS offers the planning and realisation of dismantling, as well as packaging, transportation and storage of all kinds of nuclear waste including full documentation.
In addition GNS offers the design, construction and fabrication of the facilities and equipment needed for decommissioning.
In order to provide other waste treatment functions, GNS operates a controlled area in Duisburg, where waste conditioning as well as maintenance work on transport casks and even modifications can be performed. With GNS-owned facilities and staff, GNS is also working at the research centres of Jülich and Karlsruhe.
